Setting Small Grommets
I think the small grommets in the current Mini Catalog are really cute. Still finding more ways to use them. However, in the few uses I’ve had for them, I initially struggled to get them set into my cardstock.
The recommended method by Stampin’ Up! is to place your cardstock on the foam mat from your Mat Pack, and push the grommet through. Another option is to do that without fully punching the grommet through, and using your piercing tool to make the holes the right sizes (you should have marks on your cardstock as to where the holes should be).
I didn’t like this method because it destroys your cardstock, especially if you are working with a small piece. I’ve come up with an alternate method. 🙂 Note that this works only within the reach of your Crop-o=dile.
You will need:
- Small Grommet
- Paper Snips
- Bone Folder
On the back of your piece, draw a center and mark the centers for each grommet you wish to set. In the picture below, I had a line of two grommets next to each other.
Use your Crop-o-dile, and punch two holes on either side of the center mark, using the 3/16″ hole punch. You will want it centered along the center line as well.
Now, make two holes around center mark along the other axis (perpendicular to the drawn center line).
Now, carefully punch additional holes to clean up the shape to resemble a circle. You may be left with some stray bits. Snip these off with your paper snips.
Insert the grommets into the holes from the front. They should fit easily. Don’t worry if the opening is a little irregular. It should not be visible from the front as long as you kept your hole punching close to the center point you marked at the beginning.
Start setting your grommet by bending down, toward the outside, the littel prongs using your bone folder.
Finish all of the grommets and now you are finished!
And here is a view from the front. See, you can’t tell that the holes are not quite circles.
